Description

The Madrid-CIEMAT National Facility is a fixed surface-based atmospheric observation site located on the CIEMAT research campus in Madrid, Spain—situated in the center of the Iberian Peninsula at an average elevation of approximately 665 m above sea level. The site is located in a suburban setting representative of the Madrid metropolitan area and is surrounded by research and institutional facilities, universitary campus, residential zones and green areas in the immediate vicinity. Its location offers an ideal environment for observing the influence on aerosol properties of urban emissions, as well as regional and long-range transport of pollutants. The facility has hosted atmospheric observations for 20 years.

Scientific scope

The Madrid-CIEMAT National Facility (NF) was established by combining the Madrid-CIEMAT Lidar station (integrated in EARLINET since 2006) with the in situ aerosol measurement capabilities of the CIEMAT Atmospheric Observation Station, created in 2000 and located on CIEMAT main campus in Madrid. The facility aims to provide high-quality, long-term observations of atmospheric aerosols, contributing its results to ACTRIS.
Its scientific objectives focus on characterizing the microphysical, optical, and chemical properties of atmospheric aerosols, as well as their temporal variability and vertical distribution. These capabilities enable research into aerosol formation, transformation, and aging processes, regional and long-range transport, and aerosol-climate interactions. These measurements are complemented by data on trace gases, greenhouse gases, and meteorological parameters, providing valuable information for air quality monitoring at a suburban reference station.
